When we arrived in Kuala Lumpur we were met by Fr. Joshua Ng, who was there at the arrival hall to meet us. He arranged for a taxi to take us to the Ecumenical Christian Center where we will be staying for the next few days.
We arrived and were shown to our rooms. They are totally booked, and when Steve and I got into our room, the smell was horrible coming from the bathroom. We asked to change, but there were no rooms to change to. The staff tried to lessen the smell, but to no avail. So, we were armed with air freshener and we kept the bathroom door closed. We also ran the air conditioning and the fan -- it helped, but not enough.
Not being deterred, we got into a cab and went to visit the Petronas Towers -- we couldn't go up (sold out tickets), but we were able to look around inside the shops -- there were shops from all over the world, including Harrod's! The people walking around also looked like we were at the United Nations -- what a great joy! Women in burkas, women in sleek suits, men and children -- beautiful! We had a snack at the mall at the towers and headed back to the Center.
The Rev. Fred David and his wife Yoke Fong picked us up to take us to the Peace Community Church -- which is over a chai restaurant. The government here won't let the Church buy property, so it meets in this space.
We were there for Evening Prayer with sermon. The lay leader, William, presided, and Fred preached a wonderful, uplifting sermon on the freedom of God. The worship team lead us in praise music. Afterwards we shared a meal together. It was a warm and friendly atmosphere. I felt that the community was aptly named -- it was indeed Peace-filled!
We returned back to the Center at about 10:30 and headed to bed. It was a wonderful, prayer-filled start to our stay in Malaysia!
